Ritual: the New (Old) Tool in the Conflict Transformer's Toolbox

Schirch, Lisa. Conciliation Quarterly, Jan. 1, 1998

This article discusses the role of ritual in conflict transformation studies. It discusses the dimensions of conflict-material/rational and social/relational, and the types of ritual: formal/informal, traditional/improvised, cosmological notions of the universe/general worldview. The article then discusses the definition and function of a ritual as "a contextual frame which links people together in symbolic actions which communicate a transforming message." The functions of a ritual include: framing, linking, communicating, symbolizing, acting and transforming the field of conflict studies.
