Evaluating Transformative Practice in the U.S. Postal Service REDRESS Program

Nabatchi, Tina; Bingham, Lisa B.; Moon, Yuseok. Conflict Resolution Quarterly, Mar. 1, 2010

Transformative mediation has the goal of improving the relationship between the parties through empowerment and recognition, rather than focusing on problem-solving. Transformative mediation first appeared in the employment context in 1999, when the United States Postal Service established REDRESS (Resolve Employment Disputes, Reach Equitable Solutions Swiftly) nationwide. Research assessing the impact of REDRESS shows the positive organizational effect resulting from its implementation. This study seeks to address whether USPS mediators implemented the program as it was designed. Additionally, the study introduces a training and survey approach to enhance future assessments of transformative mediation.
