As of 2009, North Carolina provided child custody mediation services in 41 judicial districts throughout the state. This documents identifies seven best practices for a successful custody mediation (p.4): judicial leadership, local rules, neutral custody mediator, written parenting agreements, active case management and collaboration, mediator training and professional development and process and outcome assessment of custody mediation. Also included in the appendices are evaluation summaries, statutes and rules related to the North Carolina Child Custody and Visitation Mediation Program.
