This article describes the foreclosure mediation program in the 3rd Judicial Circuit of Illinois, serving Madison and Bond counties. The program provides mediation services for foreclosures filed for residential properties that are the homeowner's primary residence. It was launched in summer 2011. A year later, the program had resolved more than 50 cases through "loan modification, repayment agreement, or other retention option." Even where cases are not resolved in mediation, the program administrator has seen benefits, with homeowners having a better understanding of the process. The article compares the Illinois program with the standard foreclosure process in Missouri, a non-judicial foreclosure state, and a proposed foreclosure mediation program in St. Louis.
